EICMA: MV Agusta Brutale 910

For those real lovers of élite
motorcycles, the arrival of the Brutale meant the fulfilment
of a dream. The dream of having a machine capable of performing
and handling like a "Supersportiva" but as laid back
and as much fun as a "naked".
Recent history has more than demonstrated how this objective
has been so brilliantly attained thanks also to members of the
specialist press that have repeatedly nominated it "Motorcycle
of the Year." Other factors like fact that they are widely
used by people involved in the worlds of sport, show business
and fashion as well as being an icon of desire, have contributed
greatly towards making this MV Agusta a true phenomenon and symbol
of all that is good about Made in Italy.
The Brutale has no equal for style and sophistication and offers
performance that none of its rivals can match. Recently they
have resorted to increasing their engine capacities in the vain
hope of making up lost ground.
Now with its 910cc Euro 3 engine, the MV "naked" not
only meets European anti-pollution standards but is even more
usable yet keeps the muscle of the "four-in-line" with
better torque and power output than the Euro 2 model.

The Brutale 910 marks an end to the era of red/black with black
frames and makes way for a new orange colour scheme with black
frame and wheels. There will still be three graphic combinations
available.
LOOK
Many details have been copied from the unique sports version
F41000R and in its naked form, its sheer beauty is even more
exposed when under the stage spotlights.
FRAME
The Brutale 910S frame follows the lines of the original one
on the 750cc and is still unique today in being the only frame
in the four-cylinder production category to be made from chrome-molybdenum
steel tubing. This offers a considerable advantage in terms of
compactness, mechanical access and torsional rigidity.
The tubular structure is made at the MV AGUSTA plant in Morazzone
(VA) and unites the swingarm pivot plates where both the rear
swingarm and the saddle support bracket are connected. The sculpted
single swingarm, apart from its phenomenal style, was created
as much for its beauty as for its unmistakeable technical efficiency
by the CRC (Centro Ricerche Cagiva) engineers.
SUSPENSION
The frame adds to the exceptional quality of the suspension.
The front end is looked after by Marzocchi Magnum hydraulic forks
with rebound-compression damping and spring preload adjustment.
These forks feature a quick-release mechanism for the wheel.
The lower triple clamp is a delight to the eye and, thanks to
its curvature, increases air-flow to the radiator. Rear suspension
is looked after by an adjustable Sachs single shock absorber
with rebound- compression damping and spring preload adjustment.
BRAKES
Braking at the front is via two specially made six-piston (opposed)
"Nissin F4" calipers (with differentiated diameters)
acting on 310 mm discs. The rear brake remains an unchanged four-piston
(opposed) caliper unit acting on a 210 mm disc. The Nissin-designed
front brake and clutch levers are exclusive to MV Agusta and
can be micrometically adjusted.
The wonderful star shape of the 17" rims remains unchanged
on the Brutale 910 and the tyres are either the new Pirelli "Super
Corsa Pro" or equally high-performance Michelin Pilot Power.
Tyres are 120/70 ZR 17 or 120/65 ZR up front and 190/50 ZR 17
or 180/55 ZR 17 at the rear. A new 190/55/17 developed exclusively
by Pirelli for MV Agusta is also possible.
ENGINE
The new Brutale engine copies to some extent the configuration
of the F41000R, especially in reaching the difficult benchmark
of complying with Euro 3 standards. Briefly, the Magneti Marelli
1.6M ECU is replaced by the 5SM for a complete engine management
overhaul. This has led to considerable advantages in terms of
performance that can be compared with what happened to the sports
F41000S that is now retired and the 2006 version of the F41000R.
From the latter, the Brutale engine
got the new intake valve angles that are now 10.15° instead
of 9.5°. It also got new bimetallic valves and pistons from
the F4R giving it another 2 CV maximum power output and especially
better overall delivery at all engine speeds.
Euro 3 homologation called for the introduction of a classic
lambda probe positioned inside the exhaust immediately after
the catalyser.
For this reason, the exhaust system is now a one-piece system
as opposed to the original three-piece unit. With no joints there
is less chance that disturbances in air-flow can affect overall
carburetion settings. TheBrutale engine is better prepared than
ever to deal with cold starts thanks to the new engine management
system that improves uptake and usability and that provides a
top speed of 260 kph (161.56 mph). The engine has also been fitted
with a new secondary air intake system. This unit looks after
optimising carburetion in line with triggering the catalyser
and makes the bike more ridable especially when the throttle
is feathered at speeds of up to 120 kph (75 mph) (the speed limit
at which emissions are measured for homologation).
The filtered air reaches the injector ECU operated solenoid valve
via a series of pipes and is introduced into the exhaust manifold
where it dilutes exhaust gases and improves the performance of
the catalyst. This in turn allows a better use of the air/petrol
mix with a richer ratio. The whole system is built into a new
profile rocker box cover made from magnesium instead of aluminium.
The advantages brought by this new system affect not only performance:
The ECU is now positioned behind the cylinders where the airbox
cover used to be.
This has allowed the airbox to be increased in size. Periodical
CO checks are no longer necessary as the lambda probe adjusts
itself.
PERFORMANCE
From the performance point of view, the new 910 engine outstrips
the previous version both in terms of delivery and maximum power
output. Superb tuning of the four-cylinder engine has created
a substantial increase in the maximum torque available. This
has increased from 7.9 Kgm at 10,500 rpm from the 750cc engine
to 9.8 Kgm at 7,900 rpm.
The most impressive fact however when compared with the 750 is
the increase in mid-range power. +21 CV at 5,000 rpm, +24 at
7,000 rpm and +29CV at 8,000 rpm where the 910 puts out its maximum
torque.
The engine then goes on up to 11,000 rpm at which point the maximum
power output of 139 CV is reached. Although the maximum speed
for this type of machine is a rather secondary matter, it has
increased by 7 kph. The increased smoothness provided by the
extra capacity, means better fuel consumption than the 750 in
both the urban and extra-
urban cycles.
