zumo 450, Motorcycle GPS on a budget
Garmin International Inc., a unit of Garmin Ltd., today announced
a new version of the zumo motorcycle navigator. The zumo 450
was announced in conjunction with the 2007 International Consumer
Electronics Show in Las Vegas (Garmin booth #36212).
"The zumo 450 is positioned towards the budget conscience
rider who wants a solid and reliable GPS designed for motorcycles,"
said Dan Bartel, Garmin's vice president of worldwide sales.
"Whether riding a cruiser or sportbike, the zumo's intuitive
interface and motorcycle-specific attributes make it ideal for
any rider on the go."
For the ultimate convenience and safety, riders will appreciate
the zumo 450's glove-friendly design with left-handed controls
and oversized touchscreen buttons. The waterproof (IEC 529 IPX-7
standards) device is preloaded with full North American map data
that includes over six million points of interest -- including
hotels, restaurants, gas stations, ATMs, and attractions. In
addition, zumo 450 owners may also establish customized points
of interest, such as safety cameras and school zones. Map data
is provided by NAVTEQ - a world leader in premium-quality mapping.
Riders who want a detailed log of their trips will appreciate
being able to download their favorite treks to the accompanying
MapSource software. Zumo owners can also plan routes on their
computer and download it to the zumo before they begin their
journey. In addition, riders can swap routes and waypoints with
other zumo owners via the unit's SD card slot.
Zumo owners can also access trip information directly from the
zumo's trip information page. The bright display shows the rider
their speed, heading, and a customizable fuel gauge that lets
them define the motorcycle's maximum fuel range. If a rider wants
to leave the pavement for the trail, the zumo accepts electronic
topo maps for off-road navigation.
The zumo 450 also has many security features. It includes a locking
motorcycle mount with waterproof power and data cable connections.
The mount is designed to withstand the severe vibration environment
commonly experienced in motorcycle riding. The zumo also includes
Garmin Lock, a unique theft prevention system that disables the
zumo from performing any functions until the user types in a
specific 4-digit PIN or takes the unit to a predetermined secure
location. If the user does not know the PIN or secure location,
the zumo will be inoperative.
The zumo 450 is expected to be available in March 2007 at an

The Pro-Series rear spring is a single-rate spring that compresses
at a constant rate throughout its travel, unlike the progressive-rate
stock spring that is rather soft on initial compression to provide
a smoother ride on public roads. The Pro-Series spring will deliver
a stiffer ride and is not recommend for carrying a passenger.
The stiffer rate of the Pro-Series spring also provides a broader
range of pre-load adjustment for heavier (over 200 pounds) riders.
The rates of the front and rear springs are more closely tuned
than the stock springs to provide more consistent front-to-rear
balance. The springs are designed by Showa, supplier of the stock
suspension systems, and will work well with the existing adjustable
dampers, which make this a more affordable performance upgrade.

Sete Gibernau tried the new hump integrated
system at Sepang GP last Sunday. This system has been developed
by Spidi to face even extreme heat conditions. Inside the hump
has been inserted the necessary supply of hydrating liquid for
a whole MotoGP race. Thanks to a mechanical valves system linked
to a special straw, the rider is able to drink no matter how
fast he is, whenever he feels to.
This project has been studied by Spidi technicians thanks to
the suggestions of Spidi riders, that in these final rounds of
the championship suffer demanding climate conditions due to high
humidity rate.

Brand Leader Reevu Launches Worlds First Rear-View Motorsports
Helmet
The world's first motor-sport helmet with a built-in unbreakable
rear-view mirror system* is being launched by UK brand leader
Reevu at the world's biggest motor sport show in Munich this
September.
The helmets, which are a revolutionary new development for the
industry, hasl been unveiled at the INTERMOT show in Munich.
They have been designed and created by innovative UK brand leader
Reevu, and are being hand-assembled by specialist helmet manufacturers
in Italy.
The team behind Reevu has spent ten years developing the helmets,
which are designed to save lives on the roads by preventing accidents
as well as just protecting the wearer during an accident (Prevention
is better than cure).
The innovative and world-leading technology allows the wearer
to see the road behind as well as in front of them by utilising
a system of unbreakable mirrors constructed out of ABS, which
are fitted inside the helmet mould.
 The
helmet has been designed to ensure that it meets all international
safety standards, and is of a similar size and weight to conventional
helmets. Reevu expects this tri composite helmet to retail at
circa $399, putting it in the mid-price bracket when compared
with the traditional helmets currently available. Depending on
the demand from retailers and distributors, the rear-view motor-sport
helmets are expected in the shops by early 2005.
Reevu, who is based in the North East of England, was established
in 1999. The company now has an international distribution network
across 20 countries. The launch of the motor-sport helmet is
the culmination of ten years of research and design and an investment
of around £2million. Its long-term aim is to establish
the Reevu brand across a wide-range of sports and leisure equipment.
Billy Morgan, Chief Executive of Reevu, said: "This is a
world first that has been ten years in the making. It is far
better to prevent accidents that merely provide protection, and
the world-leading technology we have incorporated in to the Reevu
motor-sport helmet will make this product a complete revolution

Race Engines Debut at Intermot
Maxsym Engine Technology Ltd launch
their GP500 & GP600 4-stroke competition engines at Intermot

- Maxsym Engine Technology Ltd, the Oxfordshire-based engine
R&D company, launch their GP500 & GP600 4-stroke competition
engines at Intermot this week.
These ultra-lightweight parallel twins, incorporating Maxsym's
patented balance system, are set to become the new force in road
race motorcycles, supermotos, superkarts, ATVs and single seater
race cars. These versatile race engines are available in
a range of specifications generating 70-110 bhp at between 11,000
& 14,000 rpm. All this delivered in a compact package
weighing between 30-37.5kg (including transmission) again depending
on specification - giving a power to weight ratio previously
only seen in moto gp!
The engines will be sold to vehicle OEMs, race teams & individual
competitors. "Where else can you buy purpose-designed
race engines like these?" asks Guy Heathcote, Maxsym's Commercial
Director. "They fill a distinct void in the market."
The display at Intermot includes a GP500 in superkart specification
with intake ports to the front of the engine and a GP600 in supermoto
specification with exhausts to the front. Each features
a 6-speed sequential (cassette-style) transmission & dry
clutch.
"We are absolutely delighted with the design," enthuses
Patrick Walker, Maxsym's MD. "We have managed to offer
no compromise race engines and yet give customers the flexibility
to choose the ideal build option for their vehicle."
The base engines are even available with a fixed reduction gear
in place of the transmission for the direct-drive personal watercraft
and snowmobile racing world. This unit weighs between 24
to 30kg depending on specification. A 450cc version is
a future possibility as well.
Retail prices start from £4995. Build options include
transmission & dry clutch, fully programmable EMS & sensors,
barrel throttle, butterfly throttle or carburettors. For
the ultimate lightweight option, magnesium crankcases and cover
sets, as well as titanium con rods are all available.
An intense development programme will be carried out over the
winter. Dynamometer testing will be completed at Maxsym¿s
state of the art test facility, with in-vehicle testing being
done in collaboration with UK-based development partners such
as Zip Kart in superkart & WIRE in supermoto. First
deliveries will be made in March next year ready for the 2005
season. A nominal deposit of £250 (approx. 400 euros)
will secure one of the first production engines.
